Today marks only a decade of international recognition of East Timor’s independence. After colonising the country since the 16th century, the Portuguese decolonised it in 1975, leaving it open to the invasion from bordering Indonesia the following year. It’s proximity to Australia (~640km from Darwin), lack of established tourism infrastructure and troubled past (killings and disappearances, forced displacement and famine, detention and torture, violations of the laws of war, political trials, sexual violence, violations of the rights of the child, and violations of economic and social rights), make it an intriguing first stop on an overland trip through Asia.
